For the past ten years, I have worked with families in a 1:1 and group setting in and around Abingdon, Oxfordshire, to understand the struggles that parents experience whilst raising their children. This is not an easy role where parents often feel stressed, overwhelmed, guilty and exhausted, and where they feel they have no quality time for themselves.
When you nourish yourself and start to incorporate even the smallest moments of self-care you tap into the energy within you that has always been there, even when you feel depleted. This energy allows you to slow down, to listen to your gut feeling and to yourself. Self-care is also about nurturing yourself, for your own benefit, and that of those around us.
I understand, as the mother of five adult children, that being a parent is like being on a journey, and like many journeys, they turn out different from what we had expected. Do you hear yourself saying the same things your parents said to you, even though you vowed never to do this? Despite our best intentions we often unconsciously pass our own learned behaviours onto our children, and often with deep and lasting repercussions. Taking care of ourselves, and moving into conscious parenting, is an effective way to transform ourselves, have empowered children, and to move forward in a positive and sustainable way.
